IVORY TOWERS ‘AETHER ORE’ VIDEO

‘Aether Ore’ video : An Interview with Quinne Rodgers of
Ivory Towers

By: Melissa Hubert, April 2016

r/n: A / S / L ??
Quinne Rodgers : immortal / female / earthly realm

r/n: Can you talk a bit about the music of Ivory Towers. I think i should rephrase my question from limiting it to ‘music’.. there is a lot of elements going on here
QR: Yeah, this is the solo project I started after my former band Myths fell apart. It started out as writing about all the things I couldn’t in Myths, mostly personal things, emotionally tethered things. Ivory Towers is certainly a multi-media project like other things I’ve done, so while music is the biggest aspect, it definitely incorporates other mediums.

r/n: Speaking on the subject of writing, can you explain the song and the idea behind ‘Aether Ore’.
QR: The video was borne out of the song, for sure. The song is very watery, and I was kind of documenting the kinds of things and ideas that went through my head while I was dealing with a lot of anxiety. The depth of the ocean was one of them.
When I met with [co-directors] Julian and Matea we talked about that, and other things that were inspiring us. H.P. Lovecraft loomed heavily, mostly from the Deep Ones and Necronomicon…
Julian was also really interested in angels, so a creature that was both an angel and a Lovecraftian being emerged.
I went through a whole phase of being totally fascinated by the depth of the ocean. I encourage anyone to read about it. The unknown is very exciting.

r/n: Curious about the project collaboration, what inspired you to work with the co-directors Matea Sarenac and Julian Briggs? Have you all worked together before?
QR: Julian and Matea are two of the most interesting people I know locally, they’re both so full of creativity and activity. I really bore myself when I’m working on visual things just by myself. I kind of get in ruts and I knew that they would bring some really interesting ideas and elements. Which they did!
We’ve never really worked together before, it was really fun to collaborate and bounce ideas around.

r/n: You designed and created the costumes for yourself and the creature in ‘Aether Ore’- Is costume and clothing creation apart of your regular art practice?
QR: Yes definitely. I love the creative potential of costumes and clothing and it’s sad when it’s not treated as the art form that it really is. Some of my favourite artists are clothing designers. It’s such an evocative medium.

r/n: Who are these favourites that are inspiring you on a clothing level?
QR: Alexander McQueen, Iris Van Herpen, John Galliano, Meadham Kirchhoff, Romance Was Born, Gareth Pugh…. I also recently discovered Undercover and Ashish, they’re amazing. European Medieval clothing has been very inspiring to me lately.

r/n: ‘Aether Ore’ was released as a single… will there be more from Ivory Towers in the near future??
QR: Definitely! I just get so impatient, haha.
But I’m also a bit of an obsessive, so I’ve got all these songs, I just need to fiddle a little more. I’m definitely planning a release. The mixtape was also an attempt to quell my terrible patience. It’s nice to put things out into the world. Listen to the mix tape here !!!

r/n: Is Ivory Towers your sole project right now or are you working on other endeavours – feel free to plug anything you’re working on, showing or if you’re performing soon…
QR: I am holed up in my room just furiously writing, surrounding myself with plants and watching documentaries on castles.

r/n: sounds divine – enjoy!
QR: thanks!
